Music Performance Program students

Music at ÌÇÐÄlogo is a vibrant and successful part of the academic and co-curricular program. Our Music Department is committed to developing confident, creative and accomplished young musicians while providing opportunities for students to discover and enjoy music.

We encourage as many students as possible to learn an instrument, join an ensemble and experience the joy and rewards of making music together. Participation in an ensemble develops essential musical cognitive and social skills, confidence, commitment and teamwork, while inspiring students to strive for musical excellence.

The Music program is led by our Music staff, with specialist tutors and conductors supporting selected ensembles, workshops and provide additional expertise across the program.

Music Academic Program

In Years 7 and 8, students study Music for three periods per cycle, exploring performance, composition and musicology across a diverse range of music topics, genres and musical styles.

Students can continue to develop their musical skills through Years 9 and 10 with many choosing to complete the HSC Music 2 and Extension course. Students in the Music Academic Elective program from Years 9-12 are expected to be learning an instrument either through tutors at school or from their own tutor.

Students with a strong background or aptitude in Music may be grouped into an accelerated program, providing challenge and allowing them to progress through the curriculum at an advanced pace.

The academic success of our music students is reflected in the strong results achieved in HSC Music. Each year, a number of Sydney Boys High students receive Encore Nominations, recognising outstanding HSC Music compositions and performances. Selected Encore compositions and performances are presented at the prestigious NESA Encore Concert at the Sydney Opera House.

Music Performance Program

Our extensive Music Performance Program provides students with a wealth of opportunities to rehearse, perform and develop their musical skills.

The Music Ensembles program includes Concert Bands, Stage Bands, String Ensembles, Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band and other smaller group ensembles. All music ensembles are held either before or after school.

Students have numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year, both within the school and in the wider community. These experiences develop not only musical ability, but also confidence, leadership and collaboration.

Students in the Music Performance Program are expected to be learning an instrument either through tutors at school or from their own tutor.

Music Parent Support

The success of our Music program is strengthened by the enthusiastic support of our parent community. Parents contribute in many ways, from assisting and helping with performances, concerts, fundraising events and other special occasions throughout the year.

We warmly encourage families to become involved. It is a wonderful way to connect with other parents of the High community and to play an active role in supporting your son's musical journey.
