High Notes, Vol 27 No 29, September 18 2026From the PrincipalOpen DayLast week, more than 800 people visited the school for our annual Open Day. Our Prefects did a wonderful job leading tours, while each sport and co-curricular activity showcased the many opportunities available at High. Our musicians filled the campus with outstanding performances, and the P&C seemed to provide an endless supply of food throughout the day. Prospective students and their families gained a firsthand insight into the rich academic and co-curricular life of the school. A special thank you to Merinda Kavich for her outstanding work in organising such a successful event. Interpreting Semester 2 Year 12 ReportsAll Year 12 students were scheduled to meet with me to get their final reports this week. The ATAR estimate on the Semester 2 report is calculated using Trial HSC examination results only. This provides students with the clearest indication of where they currently stand and, historically, these estimates have proven to be remarkably accurate predictors of final HSC outcomes. For some students, particularly those who have performed more strongly in assessment tasks, practical projects or performances than in examinations, this method may produce a lower estimate than anticipated. However, HSC examination performance remains the most significant factor in determining final outcomes. Without stronger examination results, those differences cannot be recovered. The good news is that there is still time.
Students who respond to the feedback provided by their teachers, address areas of weakness and
commit to a disciplined study routine can make substantial gains. A focused month of consistent
effort can have a significant impact on examination performance and ultimately on ATAR outcomes.
Students are encouraged to work collaboratively. Revising with peers, sharing strategies,
discussing course content and practising responses together can strengthen understanding and
improve results for everyone. Parents are encouraged to speak with their son about his study plan
between now and the commencement of the HSC. The most effective study is regular, purposeful and
consistent. Small, disciplined efforts made every day over the coming weeks will deliver far
greater results than last-minute preparation. |
